MoneyTime’s Financial Literacy Competition Expands To Australia, South Africa and the US

MoneyTime successfully launched its first-ever nationwide financial literacy competition in Australia, South Africa and the United States while hosting its second annual competition in New Zealand. This exciting challenge enabled classrooms to battle for the title of Best Financial Literacy Class in their country, helping thousands of students build essential money management skills.

Winners of 2024!

The competition challenged classrooms to achieve the highest average class score across 31 interactive financial literacy modules in the MoneyTime program. With over 122 participating classes in Australia, the race for the top spot was intense. Class Year 5 GC from Australian International Islamic College in Brisbane, Queensland overtook Class 5/6A from Caulfield Junior College in Melbourne, Victoria to claim the top spot.

In South Africa, Class Al Ghazali from Al Ghazali College comfortably secured 1st place. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, Class Team Toru 2024 from Peachgrove Intermediate School in Hamilton, New Zealand, made a dramatic comeback in the final two weeks to overtake Class Géniale Yr8 from Glen Eden Intermediate School, last year’s winning school. 751 classes took part and the top four classes received cash prizes for their schools, generously sponsored by the Milford Foundation, MoneyTime New Zealand’s cornerstone partner.

What people have to say about the competition…

CEO of MoneyTime, Neil Edmond is delighted to see teachers from around the world wanting their class to take part. “We knew after the first year teachers in New Zealand would embrace it again but to have such a positive response from the other countries is fantastic.”

Simon Corbett from Milford Asset Management says “I had the opportunity to present to the winning class from Peachgrove Intermediate – there are 54 students in this shared space classroom that really decided to get stuck into the competition, with the help of their two teachers, in the latter half of the year.  They all managed to learn something from this experience and three of the students asked me if we planned to run this event again next year! I’ve set them all the challenge to try and take some of their learnings from these quizzes and modules into the summer and see if they can rise to the top of the country again next year.”

The students loved it too. Anzar, a year 7 student at Peachgrove Intermediate says “MoneyTime was an amazing experience. This interactive program taught us crucial knowledge about finance, including responsibility with money, how to keep it safe and how to invest sensibly. Additionally, the program was engaging, keeping students interested in learning more and more. The curriculum taught me—and all the students who participated—important aspects of financial literacy, which have boosted our knowledge exponentially. Schools that wish to educate their students on money should definitely enrol in MoneyTime next year.”

Laura Clack, teacher at Kohia Terrace School (3rd place) says “Every week they are excited to start every financial literacy lesson and can't wait to see the updates to the leaderboard position each week. I have very competitive students who were motivated to complete the modules at home as well as at school. They encouraged each other to take their time to complete each module thoroughly, especially when it came to understanding the new vocabulary introduced in each module.”

With overwhelming support from teachers and sponsors, the MoneyTime Interclass Competition 2025 is set to continue as an annual event, giving more students across the four countries the opportunity to sharpen their financial skills in a fun, competitive environment.
